Catholic Stone Gifts & Statues – CNC, Laser Engraving
Technical summary: CT3D produces Catholic stone gifts and devotional items in natural stone using a digital workflow: 3D modeling (or 3D scanning of an existing piece), CAM toolpath programming, laser engraving for lettering and shallow ornamentation, and CNC roughing and finishing on the stone block, followed by hand refinement and polishing by our artisans. This approach controls proportions, relief depth and consistency across every piece in a batch, while preserving the soft, graceful character that religious objects require. We serve churches, parishes, religious communities and retailers in Vietnam and abroad.
Whether you need a single statue for a home altar, a commemorative plaque for an ordination anniversary or a batch of personalized gifts for a parish feast, the same digital file drives every step. You approve the design on screen – or on a small 3D printed model – before any stone is cut, and every name, date and Bible verse is proofread in the engraving file.

Natural stone from a carving engineer’s perspective
Each type of stone has its own crystal structure, hardness and uniformity, so the same statue design may call for different machining strategies. When advising on a project, CT3D engineers consider three factors: hardness (usually referenced on the Mohs scale), the degree of veining and inclusions, and the stone’s ability to hold fine detail on sharp edges.
| Stone group | Machining characteristics | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| Marble | Relatively soft (around 3 on the Mohs scale), takes fine detail easily and polishes beautifully; thin edges must be protected from impact | Statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints, detailed relief panels |
| Granite | Hard (around 6–7 on the Mohs scale), causes rapid tool wear, highly weather-resistant | Engraved prayer plaques, outdoor crosses, statue pedestals |
| Decorative veined stone (onyx, colored stone) | Pronounced veining, can be partially translucent; blocks must be carefully selected to avoid hidden cracks | Desktop gifts, stone pictures, commemorative items |
Mohs hardness values are common reference figures; the specific stone source is confirmed at the quotation stage.

As a rule of thumb, choose marble when the face, hands and drapery need to be expressive; choose granite when the piece will stand outdoors or must survive heavy handling; and choose onyx or colored stone when the stone itself – its veining and glow – is the main attraction of a small gift.

The technology chain: from digital data to stone
Step 1 – Creating the 3D data
If you already have a model statue, CT3D 3D scans it to capture a point cloud, converts it into a triangle mesh and cleans up the surface. If you only have photos or a concept, our designers create a digital sculpture and send multi-angle renders for your feedback before sign-off. Learn more about our capabilities on the 3D scanning service page and our concept-to-3D design service.
Step 2 – CAM programming
From the approved model, our engineers generate toolpaths: roughing to remove most of the stone, then semi-finishing and finishing with ball-nose cutters at a small step-over on faces, hands and drapery folds. These concepts are explained further in our article on what CNC machining is.
Step 3 – CNC machining and laser engraving on stone
CT3D combines two technologies: CNC for shaping the form and deep relief, and laser engraving/marking for lettering, logos, Bible verses and fine ornamentation on flat surfaces. The laser is non-contact, so it does not chip stone edges and produces crisp, consistent lines. Engraving files are vector-based (DXF/AI/SVG), which allows names and anniversary dates to be personalized for each item within the same batch.
Each stone block is checked for cracks, securely fixtured and machined with water cooling to reduce heat and dust. For full-round statues, the piece is machined from multiple sides and precisely rotated so the toolpath zones blend seamlessly.
Step 4 – Hand finishing
Machines deliver accuracy and repeatability, but the expression of a face, the softness of fabric folds and deep undercuts still require an artisan’s hand. The piece is then sanded through progressive grits, polished and, where needed, given a protective coating.

CNC carving, laser engraving or hand carving?
| Criterion | CNC carving | Laser engraving / marking | Traditional hand carving only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | 3D form, statues, deep relief | Lettering, logos, verses, fine flat ornament | Unique artistic pieces |
| Consistency across a batch | High – same file and program | High – same vector file, text personalized per piece | Varies from piece to piece |
| Changes to design | Edit the 3D file | Edit the vector file | Re-carve |
| Typical role at CT3D | Roughing and finishing of the form | Text and shallow decoration | Final expression, undercuts and polish |
In practice, most pieces combine all three: CNC for the form, laser for the text, and the artisan’s hand for the details that give a devotional statue its character.
Design guidelines for stone gifts
Stone is strong in compression but brittle at thin edges. The points below are general guidance; our engineers check each design during the feasibility review.
- Thin protrusions: fingers, crowns, halos and cross tips are the parts most likely to chip. Keep them connected to the body or slightly thicker, especially in marble.
- Relief depth: deeper relief reads better from a distance and under side lighting; shallow relief suits small gifts viewed up close.
- Lettering size: very small text and thin serif fonts are harder to read on veined or granular stone. Simple fonts and slightly larger letters typically give the cleanest result.
- Text on veined stone: strong veining can make engraved text hard to read; place text on a calmer area or consider a contrasting fill.
- Base and stability: statues need a base wide enough to stand safely; outdoor pieces should be fixed to their pedestal.
- Proofreading: names, diacritics and dates are approved in the file before engraving, because engraved stone cannot be corrected.
Surface finishing options
| Finish | Appearance | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror polish | Glossy surface that deepens color and veining | Indoor statues, desktop gifts, marble and onyx |
| Honed matte | Smooth, low-sheen surface; less glare | Plaques with text, chapels with strong lighting |
| Natural textured | Rougher, stone-like surface | Outdoor crosses, pedestals, contrast areas behind polished figures |
| Protective coating | Clear layer that helps resist stains | Pieces handled often or placed in humid locations |

Natural stone or another material?
Natural stone is the most permanent choice, but not always the right one. If weight, budget or a very large size is a concern, other materials can carry the same design file.
| Criterion | Natural stone | Composite / FRP or polyresin | 3D printed resin (painted) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look and feel | Genuine stone weight, coolness and veining | Can be painted to imitate stone or bronze; much lighter | Very fine detail; finish depends on painting |
| Weight | Heavy – needs a stable base and crating | Light – easier to move and install | Light |
| Durability | Very long life; granite suits outdoor use | Good with the right coating | Mainly indoor |
| Best for | Heirloom gifts, plaques, chapel statues | Large statues, events, tight budgets | Prototypes, small detailed figures, approval models |
See also composite FRP statues and polyresin statues.
Quality control
| Inspection item | Criteria |
|---|---|
| Incoming stone block | No hidden cracks running through detailed areas; veining distributed appropriately for the figure |
| Geometric proportions | Key dimensions checked against the approved 3D model |
| Engraved lettering | Correct spelling, diacritics and dates; uniform groove depth |
| Surface | Agreed gloss level, no tool marks, no chipped edges |
| Packing | Secured against rotation; protruding parts such as hands, crowns and cross tips padded |
For volume orders, the first piece you approve becomes the reference sample; all subsequent pieces use the same file and the same CNC/laser program to ensure consistency.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
I only have one photo. Can CT3D make a stone statue from it?
Yes. Our designers build a 3D model from the photo and send it to you for multi-angle approval before machining the stone.
Can you engrave names, Bible verses or anniversary dates?
Yes. The engraving text is laid out in the file and checked for spelling and diacritics before engraving. Because the files are vector-based, each piece in a batch can carry a different name or date.
Will items in a large order look the same?
Because every piece uses the same 3D file and CNC/laser program, proportions are consistent; the main differences come from the natural veining of the stone.
How is pricing calculated?
Pricing depends on stone type, size, complexity, quantity and finish level; CT3D quotes based on your sample or file, with design or scanning, material, machining and finishing itemized separately.
Which stone is best for an outdoor cross or plaque?
Granite is usually the better choice outdoors because it is hard and highly weather-resistant. Marble polishes beautifully and holds fine detail, so it suits indoor statues and reliefs.
Can I see the design before the stone is cut?
Yes. You approve multi-angle renders of the 3D model, and a scaled-down 3D printed model can be provided for physical review before production.
Can you copy or scale an existing statue?
Yes. We 3D scan the existing statue, clean up the mesh, scale it to the new size and use the model for CNC carving.
Do you ship stone gifts abroad?
Yes. Pieces are packed with foam padding, and heavy items in wooden crates, with protruding parts such as hands, crowns and cross tips padded. We deliver within Vietnam and ship internationally.
